Spa Maintenance Tips

Chemical Tips

If the Spa is NOT going to be used:

 

1. Remove and clean the filter cartridge.  Store the cartridge in a warm, secure place to prevent freezing.

2. We recommend adding a small amount of RV anti-freeze to the water before draining the tub.  This will keep any water left in the lines from freezing after the tub is drained.

3. Drain the tub completely and store in a garage or other storage facility.

 

OR ensure the unit is turned on at ALL times.  Engage the “Smart Winter Mode,” in accordance with your owner’s manual.

 

If the Spa IS going to be used:

 

Maintain normal operations, in accordance with your owner’s manual.

PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE

CLOUDY WATER

Excessive organic contaminants.

Shock Treat with ACTIVATE to destroy contaminants.

After each use, add a dosage of ACTIVATE (2oz./250gal.) to shock treat and regenerate the bromine sanitizer.

Dissolved chemical solids in water.

Use SPA CLARIFIER to help filter remove small particles.

Once a week or whenever spa water appears cloudy add SPA CLARIFIER (1oz./250gal.).

pH balance or total alkalinity incorrect.

Use pH MAGIC to balance water. Or test for total alkalinity and pH. Correct with SPA INCREASE, SPA DECREASE or ALKALINITY UP.

When spa is refilled with fresh water, add pH MAGIC (3lbs/500gal.) to lock-in correct pH level.

Calcium too high (hard water).

Use PROTECT PLUS regularly. Replace some of the water.

Add PROTECT PLUS (1oz./250gal.) weekly to inactivate dissolved minerals in the water.

Dirty filter.

Clean filter with FILTER FRESH.

SPA CLARIFIER, used weekly (1oz./250gal.) will help the filter remove small particles that cloud water.

CHALKY, WHITE SCALE DEPOSITS

Mineral deposits in water.

Use PROTECT PLUS. Check water balance and adjust as needed.

Add PROTECT PLUS (1oz./250gal.) weekly to prevent calcium scale formation.

CLEAR GREEN WATER

High copper or iron content.

Use PROTECT PLUS.

PROTECT PLUS (1oz./250gal.) suspends and inactivates minerals that cause water discoloration.

CLOUDY GREEN WATER

Low alkalinity level.

Use ALKALINITY UP.

Test often and maintain total alkalinity at 80-120ppm.

Low sanitizer level.

Test and adjust sanitizer level, shock with ACTIVATE.

Shock treat with ACTIVATE (2oz./250gal.) after every spa use. Maintain sanitizer level at 3-5ppm.

BROWN WATER

High iron or manganese content.

Use PROTECT PLUS.

Add weekly dosage of PROTECT PLUS to help keep metals in solution.

Leaching from redwood hot tubs.

Drain and refill frequently.

Change water monthly or as needed to maintain water quality.

ODOR

Excessive organic contaminants.

Shock treat with ACTIVATE.

Shock with ACTIVATE (2oz./250gal.) at least once a week to destroy contaminants.

Chloramines (combined chlorine) in water.

Use ENHANCE/ACTIVATE system. To mask odors, use RENDEZVOUS IN-SPA FRAGRANCES.

The ENHANCE/ACTIVATE system ensures routine shock treatment and replenishment of sanitizer residual.

EYES/SKIN IRRITATION

Organic contaminants, chloramines, pH out of balance.

Shock treat with ACTIVATE. Test and adjust pH.

Shock with ACTIVATE (2oz./250gal.) once a week. Use pH MAGIC (3lb./500gal.) to lock-in correct pH levels.

FOAMING

High concentration of chemicals, body oils, cosmetics and other contaminants due to evaporation.

Use FOAM-OUT. Shock treat with ACTIVATE.

Shock treat with ACTIVATE (2oz./250gal.) weekly. Use NATURAL CLEAR (1oz./500gal.) to help eliminate body oils and lotions.

Calcium Hardness too low.

Use LIQUID CALCIUM HARDNESS UP.

Test often and adjust to maintain recommended water balance levels.

PITTING OF METAL FIXTURES OR PLASTER SPA SURFACE

and/or total alkalinity too low.

Adjust total alkalinity and pH balance of water with SPA INCREASE, ALKALINITY UP.

Test and adjust as necessary to maintain pH at 7.2 - 7.8 and total alkalinity at 80-120ppm. When spa is refilled with fresh water, add pH MAGIC (3lb./500gal.) to lock-in correct pH level.

SCUM DEPOSITS ON WATERLINE

Body oils and dirt.

Use SPA CLEANSE to clean spa surfaces. Use NATURAL CLEAR regularly to reduce scum and odor-causing oils, lotions and organic materials in water.

Add NATURAL CLEAR (1oz./500gal.) once a week to remove scum lines and protect filter from oily build-up and clogging.
